These waffles cost about $2.50 at Safeway and each package contains about 6 waffles. This is substantially more expensive than regular waffles which often come with 8-10 per package at roughly the same price. These are (so far) my favorite brand of affordable waffle. I’m not saying you won’t find better waffles at Whole Foods or other health food stores, but I sure as hell can’t afford to eat those regularly.
Here’s what they look like still frozen (looking suspiciously similar to the waffles on the front of the box). When compared next to regular waffles they look almost the same. The difference comes in the taste, texture, and look after toasting.
Here’s what they look like after toasting. They came out crispy and mostly golden brown using the “Frozen” button on my toaster and setting the heat to 6 (of 10). This setting would likely burn the hell out of regular waffles, but gluten free items usually take significantly longer and/or more heat to toast.
Despite looking and tasting mostly good, there were a few softer spots. It’s really difficult to get toasted gluten free items perfectly crispy, as they quickly start to burn.
Despite being made by a Safeway owned brand, I found them cheaper and tastier than some of the “name brands” I’ve tried. They don’t toast perfectly but they’re leagues ahead of other GF Waffles I’ve tried. The best indicator I can give is that I often toss 2 in the toaster and eat them plain when I’m in a hurry.
Recommendation
If you’ve been missing waffles since becoming gluten free, then I recommend you buy, or at least try these!
